Special Exhibitions

The Japan Foundation, Toronto will host an exhibition "Washi over Time" showing both the traditional uses of washi and the migration of textile patterns onto paper (chiyogami). In addition, origami folded by talented folders who use washi will be on view.

"New Work by Washi Veterans," an exhibition at The Japanese Paper Place, will highlight the work of Canadian artists who have worked for many years with washi and produced exceptional art with it.

Exhibitions of artwork on washi will be held in more than 35 prominent art galleries and other venues in and around Toronto. It will include new works by Canadian and international artists. Both seasoned users of washi and well-known artists who have just discovered it, will be represented.

Works will include prints, drawing, painting, sculpture, papercuts, stitched work, mixed media, screens and lamps. Works from many of Canada’s best artists and from the USA, Japan, China, Scotland, Iceland, Finland, Mexico, South Africa and Chile will be shown.

Many of the galleries will also host demonstrations by exhibiting artists using washi, including wood engraving, pochoir, papercuts, stitching, painting and printmaking.
